SOCAS is the research group in Social Cognition put together by Leonel Garcia-Marques.
Leonel Garcia-Marques is, along with Teresa (Tammy) Garcia-Marques, among the initiators of Social Cognition research in Portugal. Their early work with Dave Hamilton and Diane Mackie as well as their enthusiasm for social cognition lead to the development of this field of research in our country. Somehow (and that we don't tell you) they managed to persuaded a bunch of people that what they were doing was interesting and over the last 8 years this group has been growing up to 15 or 20 persons.
Although the idea of having a social cognition group in Portugal was already in some people's (read Leonel) heads, only during the year of 2004 did SOCAS really started to exist, as it does today: common research projects, regular meetings, etc...
And why? (you may ask). We could tell you it was because of an interesting research project, or because we finally gather a nice group of brilliant people (which BTW happens to be true) but that would be a lie. SOCAS was actually created because we decided to make some sport... To be more specific we started to play basketball every week!
As time went by, we extended this activity to other (less calorie consuming) activities such as dinner parties, night live and so on...
And now for something completely different… What does SOCAS mean? When we started playing basketball we realised, soon enough (about 12127 ms later), that we were truly a ‘nightmare’-team! So, to develop our skills as players we created SOCAS. That is, something to promote research and everything that is social. SOCAS is the acronym of SOcial Cognition bAsket aSsociation! In portuguese the term SOCAS refers to wooden shoes... We are still deciding if we are going to try a basketball game with this kind of shoes... Just in case, in a recent visit to the Netherlands we acquired an original...
Nevertheless, the way we play really looks like that we wear them already!
